Hello, my name is Andrea Miller and I am from Fenton, MI, which is a small city a little north of Ann Arbor. Despite living in Fenton (or at least the mailing address region, I really don't live within the boundaries of any city) I went to Hartland High School. I am a rising sophomore in chemical engineering and plan on declaring an international minor, concentrating on French, in the fall. I also have an interest in possibly doing an electrical engineering minor, but have yet to decide if I will follow that route or not. I am really interested in alternative energy, specifically solar cells, and hope to find myself researching or working in industry in that field. I have yet to decide if I want to attend graduate school and go the Ph. D. route, but I do intend to obtain a masters degree at some point in my career. As of right now I am considering both chemical engineering and materials science and engineering for my advanced degree.
I live on a lake, most of my favorite things to do involve the water. I love to water ski (not that much of a wake boarder) and my lake has a show skiing team that is tons of fun. If you have never seen water show skiing I suggest you type "water show skiing" into youtube and check out some of the cool videos! I also love swimming and tubing and other general water fun. I danced in high school, training in ballet/ pointe, jazz, tap, contemporary, lyrical and hip hop, but unfortunately have not been able to be very involved during college, but I hope I can fit a dance class into my schedule next semester. I also love to read and which I had more time to do with classes. But this summer I have started reading the Game of Thrones series and also finished The Fault in Our Stars and The Kite Runner, all of them are pretty amazing and I would recommend reading them if you are interested.
Since I live fairly close to Ann Arbor, I have had the opportunity to experience Ann Arbor in the summer, but I am super excited to be down here all the time this summer to enjoy top of the park, the art fair and everything that makes an Ann Arbor summer amazing. I am also intending on seeing Shakespeare in the Arb one of these upcoming weeks, so let me know if you are interested in joining!
I think one of the most unusual things about me is that I have an extra bone in my ankle that does absolutely nothing. It's something that a small percentage of the population is born with and I discovered I had it by my doctor noticing a shadow that almost looked like a bone chip showing up in multiple of my x-rays from having injured my ankles on multiple occasions. One of my most interesting life experiences was going to Cranks, Kentucky for and alternative spring break trip this year and working on building a house for families in rural poverty. It was definitely an experience where I felt like I learned and received so much more than I got back by hearing stories from people living there of how they have been affected and worked through poverty and being affected by regulation in clean energy as Cranks is a mining town.
I look forward to getting to meet more of you throughout the summer!
