The community service event was an excellent way to give back to the community and to meet other students involved in research this summer. The team building had an almost tangible effect on the team dynamic: before we began, we were an awkward circle of silent students, but after completing several challenges, we were a team which could work together efficiently and enjoyably.
While I did learn a bit about the mechanics of bicycles, I learned more about how to effectively communicate and work with a team. (I also learned about reductionism and quarks from other students.)
Many different approaches to the activities were evident: some students dove in, with a trial and error approach, while others developed a strategy first. However, it was the mix of these approaches which allowed us to be successful.
In my research lab, I am better equipped to be part of a team and to appreciate all approaches to research. I can appreciate more the benefits from lab pizza parties (team building!).
If able to do the event again, I would like to have more of an opportunity to get to know the recipient of our bicycle. Our exchange was very nice, albeit brief.
