What? So What? Now What?

The build a bike event allowed us to do a lot of team building. In order to do the activities successfully, it was crucial that everyone needed to take part. Unless everyone agreed to follow a loose plan, the activity would fall apart.

I learned how brakes work on a bike and also how to screw things in. That was an interesting skill that will surely come in handy in the future. I expected the event to be more centered around the actual community service (building a bike) rather than team building. However, I enjoyed getting to know my group and I acknowledge the idea that it is important to feel comfortable with people that I work with. Everyone in my group contributed their own ideas. It was great seeing us able to collaborate and together discuss the best plan of action.

I can definitely see how this event parallels a research lab. Through theory, thinking, collaboration, and trial and error we together came up with the solution to each of the problems. It required us to work together and build off of each other's knowledge, much like in a lab.

If I could do the activities again, I think I would try to do more planning and less trial and error. It would be nice to have sat down at a table and just thought about what to do and waste less time.
