There were many useful tips I learned from the workshops. Being a part of the M-STEM program I have been able to learn the value of networking with future employers, professors, and even peers. The "Career Development 101" workshop reminded me of why networking is so useful.
I have not had too much experience with writing academic articles until this summer. Although I have not written an article yet, I have been reading many academic articles as part of my research. During the workshop I learned that reading academic articles is the first step to writing. By talking to other students I got some useful tips about how I should read the articles. A fellow UROP student said that the abstract is the most important part of an academic article so you should read the abstract slowly and carefully several times. I have been doing this with the articles I have been reading, and I think it gives me a better understanding of the articles.
I thought the most useful workshop was the "Getting Published" workshop, because before this summer I was not really sure what it meant to get published. After reading so many academic articles I realized why getting published is a big deal. The workshop prompted me to have a chat with my mentor about getting published. I learned a lot from her about getting published once you have your own project, and found out I may even be published in one of her papers.
