Workshop Reflection
I was unable to attend Career Development 101 due to an academic meeting, but I did learn a great deal of valuable information from Writing Academic Articles and Getting Published. My work has been included in a publication before, but I did not get to participate in the writing process. This year, I will be writing my own paper and submitting it for publication. The workshop was helpful in that it familiarized me with the submission and revision process. I now know that an article must be submitted to only one journal at a time, and that it may take a while for the publisher to respond. Although peer reviews may be tough, it is important to take them into consideration and modify/add to your work as needed before it is ready for publication. I also liked that Shelly had tips for making science writing approachable and interesting. I will be referring to some of the books she mentioned during my writing process. Lastly, I learned more about the resources at the Sweetland Writing Center, and will be setting up some appointments with their peer tutors soon. Overall, it was a useful and interesting workshop.
