The Career Development 101 and Writing Academic Articles and Getting Published workshops have been beneficial in expanding my understanding of professional development and publishing.
Although absent from the Career Development workshop due to a lab conference, I was able to review materials from the workshop, such as the sample resumes. This information has impressed upon me the importance of continually updating and improving my resume and other professional documents. I can also appreciate the importance of networking with other students and being proactive in professional development.
The workshop Writing Academic Articles and Getting Published was very informative and especially useful because the speaker drew from personal experiences. It was interesting to hear about the entire publication process, including revising and resubmitting manuscripts. I was encouraged to begin writing about my research, even though I do not have a complete, publishable data set. It was also beneficial to think of writing as a narrative; even a scientific article tells a story.
