The workshop concerned with developing a career was helpful for us as college undergrads, as that is an issue we'll have to face in the near future. Additionally, I know that I am often unsure of what kind of careers can be made from a research profession outside of academia. This workshop helped by covering the tools and objectives necessary to compete in a job market to get the position I would want. In particular it was helpful to hear about different strategies for networking and then using those connections in order to obtain interviews and maybe even job opportunities. Additionally the information about constructing a resume was helpful, as there are so many different opinions on resume production that it is difficult to find what works.
The second workshop, on writing and publishing academic work, was also helpful. This seminar showed some of the behind the scenes work that needs to go into getting a paper published. The process for submitting and interacting with a journal wasn't a process well known to me, and I had some misconceptions. By going through the process it helped me to see just how much effort is necessary to get to a published article. As far as the actual writing, it is always helpful to hear tips and get a look at the process because many papers are complex to read, let alone writing something like that. Once again, getting a look at the process and the steps involved were enlightening and would help to make me more confident and knowledgeable for when I begin the process of submitting for publishing.
